Black type target beckons for Chris Waller’s midweek Star

Heavy conditions couldn’t stop Chris Waller from showcasing two well-bred youngsters at Warwick Farm midweek, with Burma Star and Beside The Sea both posting eye-catching victories.

Burma Star, an Exceed And Excel colt, broke through in the Keeneland September Yearling Sale Handicap (1100m). The three-year-old had been threatening to win in his earlier runs and put it all together at start five, having previously chased home Blitzburg and King Of Pop as a juvenile.

Previously trained by James Cummings, Burma Star has been integrated into Waller’s yard under Godolphin’s new training model. Waller said his rival deserved recognition. “I’m just taking James’ wages,” Waller joked. “What we’ve seen from Godolphin is they’ve got amazing systems, good staff, the horses are so well educated and they look fantastic.”

Backed into $1.95 favouritism, Burma Star dominated the wet track, clearing out by 3-3/4 lengths over Hush Hush ($41), with Defiance ($5) finishing third. Waller said discussions with James McDonald would determine whether carnival races loom on the horizon. “I will have a good chat to James…. hopefully we can pick up some black type for the mare and for the Godolphin operation,” he said.

Soon after, Waller struck again when Beside The Sea ($8.50) destroyed her rivals in the Inglis Xtra Bonus Maiden Series Handicap (1300m). Ridden by Jason Collett, the Zoustar filly – a half-sister to Golden Slipper winner Farnan – scored by nearly four lengths over favourite Koibito ($3.20). It followed her runner-up effort on debut at Randwick’s Kensington track.

Waller said her pedigree and performance meant there was no need to push on this prep. “I wanted to get today out of the way. She is obviously very well bred and she won’t need to do a lot more this prep,” he said. “If you spelled her now, in the autumn she could be one of those P J Bell (Stakes), James Carr (Stakes) fillies.”
