Blue Diamond winner still on 2025 Golden Slipper path

Devil Night, winner of the Blue Diamond Stakes, remains in the mix for a start in the upcoming Golden Slipper, with co-trainer Michael Hawkes confirming that the colt has settled back into their Rosehill stable.

The two-year-old was the center of attention at Randwick on Saturday after two of his past rivals—Tentyris (second in the Blue Diamond) and Tempted (seventh)—claimed victories in the Todman Stakes (1200m) and Reisling Stakes (1200m), strengthening the Melbourne formline.

As a result, both winners now sit at $7 in Golden Slipper betting, trailing only Todman Stakes runner-up Wodeton ($5). Meanwhile, Devil Night remains a $15 chance but is tracking well to join the field for the $5 million Golden Slipper (1200m) on March 23.

“The Melbourne form is definitely holding up,” Hawkes said at Randwick.

“He’s here in Sydney. He’s in the stable and he is progressing well. We’ll take him one step at a time but he is a chance of lining up.

“We want to be 100 per cent happy, that’s what we’ve got to make our decision on, and everything is OK at the moment.”

Devil Night has competed exclusively in Victoria, with a runner-up finish in the Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) at Caulfield complementing his Group 1 triumph. However, the colt is no stranger to Sydney’s right-handed tracks, having been educated and trialed in the city earlier in his career.

Hawkes Racing also has another potential Slipper hopeful in West Of Swindon, who finished second in the Silver Slipper and will contest the Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill this Saturday to strengthen his case.

“He’s down to trial on Monday, whether we do give him a tick-over trial or we work him Tuesday, we’ll see how we go over the weekend,” Hawkes said.

“But he’s really good and he’s Pago Pago bound.”

Meanwhile, stablemate Swiftfalcon, who placed in the Randwick Guineas, is being aimed at the Doncaster Mile (1600m). However, a decision is yet to be made on whether he will take a lead-up run in the Rosehill Guineas (2000m).
