Blue Dream faces Stakes test after successful debut

Trainer Grahame Begg intends to follow up a successful maiden debut with another Stakes race attempt for one of his promising fillies, a feat he achieved just last week.

Last Saturday saw Aroused transition from winning a maiden race at Ballarat on her debut to securing a close second in the Listed Crockett Stakes at Flemington.

This Saturday, the Group 3 The Vanity, run over 1400 metres, will be the stage for Begg’s next three-year-old filly to compete in Stakes company.

Blue Dream marked a winning start to her career at Kyneton on October 8, launching a late charge from the rear under jockey Jordan Childs.

Begg prefers to send his less experienced gallopers to Kyneton, as it provides an environment where they can overcome a slow beginning.

“She jumped in the air when he let them go,” Begg said. “The plan wasn’t to be back last, so he had to take his medicine because she drew wide. She stood the leaders up a very big start and put up a bit of a phenomenal effort to get up in the last stride. Kyneton, it’s a good surface and that 1200-metres start, there is a good run down the back straight, so I like going there, especially for a young horse having their first start.”

Begg commented that the daughter of Justify has trained well since her first outing, but this race is expected to be her final run before a break.

He believes that Blue Dream will lengthen in distance with maturity and is looking forward to her autumn campaign.

Given her ownership by Yulong, Begg highlighted that any Black Type achieved now would be exceptionally valuable for her future.

“It’s a big step going from a Kyneton maiden to running in a Stakes race, but we feel she’s a filly with some promise,” Begg stated. “The further she steps out in distance, because she’s by Justify, that will suit her. She’s a plain looking girl, a homebred of Yulong’s, but she’s got some talent there and if she can get some Black Type, all the better.”
