Bridal Waltz turned the tables on hot favourite She’s An Artist with a determined victory in the Listed Creswick Stakes (1200m) at Flemington, rewarding the quiet confidence of co-trainer Peter Moody.
The filly was beaten convincingly by She’s An Artist on June 21st, but this time she proved too strong, winning by three-quarters of a length at $13. The $1.30 betting favourite faded late, while Duchess Zou ($13) finished third, 1-1/2 lengths behind.
“She did very well post Adelaide so we sort of decided that she went into that (last run) probably slightly underdone,” Moody explained.
“She was ready to peak today but obviously respectful of the two that beat her coming here from the other day, but we thought we were in the wrong part of the track.”
Moody added: “We were quietly confident we could turn it around, we just had to hope the favourite maybe wasn’t as good as the hype.”
The victory confirmed Bridal Waltz’s class and value, and Moody noted she will now enjoy a short break before returning in the spring.
“She’s just a gutsy little filly from a terrific family,” he said. “She’s a stakes winner now, which adds so much to her value.”
Rider Ben Melham made sure to savour the moment, holding off his wife Jamie Kah in the final stages of the race.
“A fair chance of sleeping in the spare room, I would imagine,” Melham joked. “She just found a beautiful rhythm and had plenty left when it counted.”
