City trip for Brandjam

Trainer Glen Thompson is aiming for a winning return at Caulfield after a disrupted week that saw him miss out on a midweek runner due to weather-related race cancellations.

Thompson, who last saddled up a horse on June 7 when Benagil finished third in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m), had Monte Cassino set to race at Sale on Wednesday. However, the meeting was abandoned midway, leaving Thompson waiting for his next opportunity.

That opportunity comes in the form of Brandjam, who will step out in the 1440m Remembering Robbie Laing Handicap at Caulfield on Saturday.

Brandjam was among the horses transferred to Thompson’s stable following the passing of respected trainer Mike Moroney and has already repaid that faith with a strong maiden win.

“It would be great to get another winner for Chris and Lynn from Kariba Racing as they have been massive supporters of mine since going back out on my own,” Thompson said.

Following that maiden victory, Brandjam has performed creditably, including a recent Cranbourne win that has set him up well for this weekend’s challenge.

“He won his maiden at The Valley, so we tried him in some better races after that,” Thompson said.

“It was getting towards the end of his first prep, and he was still a colt.”

Now gelded, Thompson believes Brandjam is showing renewed focus and strength in his races.

“The query is probably the 1400 (metres), but I thought he was strong to the line at Cranbourne,” he said.

“He’s not a big horse, but he’s got a big heart and tries hard, so it should take him a long way.”

“He’s going to have to get some cover and relax as he does everything a little bit quick at this stage, but if he can find a bum and switch off a little bit, I’m sure he can run it out.”
