Tommy Stokes is optimistic that promising colt Matahga can continue the tradition of future stars emerging from the Oaklands Plate, set to run Saturday at Morphettville Parks.
The son of Tivaci delivered a dominant display over 1200m at Thomas Farms Racecourse Murray Bridge earlier in June, and now steps up to the Listed 1400m test as favourite.
Stokes, operating from the Adelaide base of the Phillip Stokes yard, sees further upside in the colt’s development.
“We’ve got a lot of time for him,” he said. “He was super in both of his two runs this time in and I think he’s improved again.”
“1400m is definitely going to be a big plus so he’s a horse to follow.”
Matahga could soon shift to the team’s Pakenham base should his rise continue. Stokes is no stranger to success in this race, having prepared 2024 winner Femminile, later victorious in the SA Derby.
This year’s race also features Kazaru, Ethereum Girl, Miss Ellaneous and Testing One Two, forming a competitive line-up.
Betting markets reflect confidence in Matahga, installed at $2.90, with Ethereum Girl at $3.90 and Miss Ellaneous at $4.50.
