Trainer Chris Waller is preparing a quintet of runners for the upcoming Gosford Gold Cup, seeking his fourth win in the 2100m event. Notably, all five—First Light ($101), Etna Rosso ($26), Scarlet Oak ($15), Medatsu ($13), and Mr Waterville ($41)—are slated to start at double-digit odds.
Medatsu, the most favored among them, is set to back up after a solid fourth in the recent Wagga Cup (2000m). With a favorable draw at barrier two, Waller hopes for a more prominent position during the race.
“From a wide draw the other day he just got a long way back so we will try to use the draw and have him a bit closer,” Waller said.
“He ticks a few boxes and he’s a decent horse.”
Prior to Wagga, Medatsu secured a fifth-place finish in the Albury Cup (2000m). Kerrin McEvoy continues his association with the gelding.
Mr Waterville, initially targeting the Sydney Cup (3200m), was an emergency and did not gain a start. Freshened since his run in the Chairman’s Handicap (2600m), he now eyes the Brisbane Cup (3200m) as a future goal.
“He’s had lots of excuses along the way but he’s well and he’s a rough place chance on Saturday,” Waller added.
Klondike, burdened with top weight, is unlikely to run from a wide gate. Co-trainer Tom Charlton is considering the Andrew Ramsden Stakes (2800m) at Flemington as a more suitable option.
“We had a slightly negative run with him the other day and we don’t want to do the same thing again,” Charlton said.
The Gosford Gold Cup, a qualifier for the Big Dance, has drawn a capacity field of 14, with last year’s winner Hezashocka topping the betting at $5.
