Dabernig keeps Shadhavar to own age at Caulfield races

Tom Dabernig has chosen a more patient approach with talented filly Shadhavar, deciding against a shot at Stakes company this weekend. Instead of lining up in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield, Shadhavar will contest the Tobin Brothers Celebrating Lives Handicap (1100m) on Saturday.

“This is her last chance to compete in her own age group before she turns four,” Dabernig said. “We’ll have opportunities to test her at Stakes level against mares in the new season if she continues to improve.”

Shadhavar resumed with a fifth over the same course and distance on July 12. Although disappointed with the result at first, Dabernig later concluded that the effort was better than it appeared. “The first four home had all had race fitness on their side, whereas she was first-up,” he said. “She was travelling well until late, and that run will bring her on nicely.”

The Warrnambool-based trainer believes Shadhavar is the type of horse who benefits most from a run under race conditions, despite working well in trials. “She’s a filly who always comes forward with a run. Trials are good, but they don’t replicate race-day intensity,” Dabernig explained.

With John Allen staying aboard, Dabernig is optimistic Shadhavar will be sharper second-up. Markets for her race are now available through major betting sites.
