Trainer Ashley Maley is aware that Lano faces his toughest test to date in Saturday’s Listed Belmont Classic (2200m), but he is optimistic the improving gelding can rise to the occasion. At $10 in early markets, Lano is rated an outside chance behind fancied pair Fancy Red and Arcadia Park, yet his current form suggests he cannot be overlooked.
The son of Blue Point will line up for the eighth time this preparation, having produced three wins from his past four starts, including a strong Bunbury victory over 1690m. After a slow start to his campaign, Lano has continued to build momentum and heads into the Classic in peak condition.
“I’ve always thought he had plenty of ability,” Maley told Tabradio. “Earlier in his career, we probably didn’t give him long enough breaks and it took a toll on him. But he’s a genuine horse who tries hard every time. He can be a bit arrogant, but once you get after him, he gives everything. He’s racing really well and seems to thrive on hard racing.”
Despite his confidence in the gelding’s toughness, Maley concedes that Lano will need to produce a career-best performance. “He’s the type who just keeps finding the line,” Maley said. “He’s very tough and we know he’ll run out the trip. But this is a serious race, and he’ll need to lift again.”
Maley pointed to Belmont Oaks heroine Fancy Red as the runner to beat following her storming win over 2019m. “Adam’s filly was outstanding in the Oaks,” Maley said. “All the fillies ran well, but she’s the one you have to beat.”
Fancy Red has firmed into a $2.10 favourite, edging out Arcadia Park at $2.45 after his last-start victory in the Aquanita Stakes (2019m). Lano will jump from the outside gate in the field of eight, with Natasha Faithfull retaining the ride.
