OTI Racing is set for a busy week with several runners returning to the track, but it is one eye-catching trialler who is drawing the most attention.
Melbourne Cup hopeful Deakin is scheduled to step out at the Pakenham jumpouts on Tuesday morning.
The Phillip Stokes-trained French import established himself as one of the nation’s most exciting stayers last preparation, signing off with victory in the Listed Roy Higgins Quality. OTI Racing’s Terry Henderson said the stable has been just as impressed with what they have seen from him this time in.
“We’ve had to keep the brakes on him a little bit because he’s been doing so well,” Henderson said.
“He looks to have come back with a bit more speed, to be honest. He seems quite sharp.
“He might not even be a Melbourne Cup horse in reality. He might be more Caulfield Cup horse or a 2000-metre, 2400-metre horse.
“We’re just not quite sure where he fits in that mould yet but he’s very well and we’re really happy with him.”
Tuesday’s outing will be his second jumpout this campaign, having finished a quiet sixth over 800m at Caulfield’s Heath track on July 30.
The six-year-old son of Australia is due to kick off his spring in the $1 million Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 30, followed by the 1600m Makybe Diva Stakes, before connections map out the rest of his campaign.
Deakin was among the early nominations for the $5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m), joined by Group 1 New Zealand Derby placegetter Golden Century, who resumes in a 1500m maiden at Hawkesbury on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the stable will unveil another exciting prospect this Sunday at Sale when the Mark Walker-trained Shamus Award colt Cinturato makes his debut. Although unraced, the Cox Plate (2040m) nominee turned heads in a Cranbourne jumpout last Monday, winning by eight lengths with ease.
