Empire Rose Stakes triple threat from Waller

Chris Waller will field a strong three-pronged attack in Saturday’s Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes, the premier event for mares during the Melbourne Spring Carnival.

Fangirl, Lazzura and Leica Lucy will represent the stable as Waller aims to add to his previous victories in the race with Atishu (2023), Red Tracer (2013) and Shillelagh (2018).

Waller said Fangirl remains the class runner of his trio.

“I’m very happy with Fangirl after her work on Tuesday,” Waller said.

“She would be the top seed just on class alone based on what she has done throughout her career.

“She’s in the twilight zone (career wise), but she was bright and happy on Tuesday morning at Breakfast With The Stars.

“She had a good look around up the straight, but she’s ready to turn it on, on Saturday.”

Fangirl’s lead-up form includes victory in the 7 Stakes and a midfield finish in the King Charles III Stakes last start.

Lazzura and Leica Lucy come via the Toorak Handicap, where they performed strongly at Caulfield.

A minor gear change has been applied to Leica Lucy after advice from new stable assistant Darren Beadman.

“She lays-in quite badly and Darren Beadman suggested a one-eyed blinker,” Waller said.

“We put it on her and Steven Arnold rode her in work on Tuesday, and he said she worked really well.”

Waller expects Lazzura to appreciate returning to a more spacious circuit.

“She had a tough run early and I think she’s better ridden off the speed a little bit and I think she’ll really love coming back to Flemington,” he said.
