The training trio of Ben, Will and JD Hayes believe the relocation of the $10 million Golden Eagle to Randwick may play directly into the hands of their in-form galloper Evaporate.

The race has been run at Rosehill since its inception, but Randwick will host Saturday’s edition due to the scheduling change.

Evaporate will arrive at the feature full of confidence after going within a stride of Group 1 success in the Toorak Handicap earlier this month.

Ben Hayes said the challenging 1600m Toorak run was a perfect platform to drop back to 1500m.

Evaporate kicked off the campaign in the P B Lawrence Stakes, was hampered by a minor foot setback, then returned to win the Sandown Stakes before his Toorak placing.

“He ran enormous in the Toorak,” Hayes said.

“We just got beaten by Transatlantic who franked the form by coming out and winning in Sydney last week.

“On the day, Transatlantic got an easy lead, and we were the only horse that came out of the pack to challenge him.

“We slightly peaked on our run, but I think now that we’ve had those last couple of runs under the belt, he’s definitely good enough to win a race like the Golden Eagle.”

The Randwick switch is seen as a strategic bonus.

Evaporate has previously won at the track and Hayes believes the more spacious layout will bring out his best.

“He won the Carbine Club up in Sydney earlier this year, so moving the race there, where he’s run well before, might be an advantage for us,” Hayes said.

“Being on his Sydney leg might be a good thing for him. He relaxes better on that Sydney leg.”
