Rebecca Bayliss is optimistic about a big winter campaign for Final Siren following his strong return trial at Belmont on Monday. The four-year-old gelding looked sharp in his first public outing this preparation, settling behind the pace before surging up the inside for an eye-catching finish under jockey Lucy Fiore.
The performance has convinced Bayliss to target the Listed Beaufine Stakes on July 5 at Pinjarra, confident that the gelding’s excellent fresh record and maturity will play a key role in his success.
“I was really, really pleased with him,” Bayliss told Racing WA.
“He came back from his break really well and I was happy with the way he spelled.
“We were nearly going to go one after the Bunbury Stakes and I galloped him after, but I thought we needed to tip him out.
“I think we made the right call because if you go that one more and it takes forever to get over it.
“This time he’s come back nicely, obviously we know he can do it, but you have to have them right, don’t you.
“The plan is to go and tackle the Beaufine Stakes and after that we’ll wait and see how he gets through it.”
Final Siren has long been the stable’s star, bursting onto the scene with a five-length debut win at Albany. His career-best win came in January in the Mount Barker Sprint (1300m), and he’s proven himself with strong performances in races like the Pinjarra Classic and Bunbury Stakes.
Bayliss believes this campaign could be his best yet.
“He seems to be a little more professional now,” she said.
“He knows his job and wants to get it done.
“Even in his action he looks more coordinated.
“I think he has improved, we’re hoping he has.”
Fiore, who has formed a strong partnership with Final Siren, was just as pleased.
“She was really happy and said he felt great,” Bayliss added. “She said he trialled really nicely.”
With six wins, five placings and over $300,000 in prizemoney, Final Siren is primed for another strong campaign and shapes as a key contender in the Beaufine Stakes.
