A wide run at Rosehill had proven no obstacle earlier in the card, and Jason Collett used the same tactic as Firestorm charged home to take out the Millie Fox Stakes.
The four-year-old daughter of Japanese sire Satono Aladdin secured her maiden black-type victory, boosting her breeding credentials with a strong performance in the 1300m Group 2 event for fillies and mares.
“Jason gave her a beautiful ride—she was well-prepared for today’s race,” trainer Chris Waller said.
“She had two trials, and we knew she had ability, but winning a Group 2 was a big jump for her.”
Firestorm ($7.50) claimed victory by a narrow long head over $31 betting app outsider Dark Glitter, with Scarlet Oak ($10) finishing 1½ lengths back in third.
Despite being the $1.65 favourite, Makarena finished just outside the placings in fourth. Collett was pleased with Firestorm’s ability to outsprint her highly regarded rival.
“She was really sharp today,” Collett said.
“She settled well despite being three pairs back in a moderately run race, and I always felt she’d be running on strongly.
“Makarena is a quality filly, controlling the pace up front, so I was a bit worried. But at the 150m mark, Firestorm just clicked into another gear and powered away.
“That was impressive.”
Makarena’s jockey, Tyler Schiller, was satisfied with her first-up run but noted she had to work hard early.
“I thought she was good fresh,” Schiller said.
“She just had to do too much from the barrier.”
Firestorm’s victory secured Chris Waller his seventh Millie Fox Stakes win since 2012.
