Cinch does it easy in the Tasmanian Oaks

The Victorian-based Lindsay Park team added another triumph to their rich history in the Tasmanian Oaks as Cinch stormed home to claim the $150,000 Listed race at Launceston on Friday night.

Trained by Ben, Will, and JD Hayes, the promising filly backed up her impressive 1732m maiden win at Sale on February 2 with an even stronger showing over 2100m.

While this marked the first Tasmanian Oaks win for Will and JD Hayes, their co-trainer Ben previously teamed up with Tom Dabernig to claim the race in 2021 with Chequerboard. Their father, David Hayes, had earlier dominated, winning three of the seven editions between 2007 and 2013.

“Hot favourite and winner a long way from home, Cinch captures first stakes victory in the Listed Kevin Sharkie Tasmanian Oaks over 2100m at Launceston.
With just 5 runs (2 wins and 2 placings), Cinch becomes the 34th stakes winner for Dundeel and is a half-sister to Golden…”

Jockey Anthony Darmanin secured his first Tasmanian Oaks win aboard Cinch, stepping in for Daniel Stackhouse, who rode the filly to victory at Sale but chose to ride at Moonee Valley instead, where he picked up a double, including the Listed Torney Cup.

“I have to thank Ben, Will, and JD for the opportunity. Stacky was supposed to come, but he didn’t, and I’m glad I got the job done for them,” Darmanin said.

Cinch, the $3 race favourite, surged to a commanding three-length victory over Moorlands Miss ($10), with Luvya Mumma ($15) finishing in third.

Darmanin was confident throughout the run.

“Alana had it easy in front, and I was just cruising. It felt like a training gallop—she was that relaxed,” he said.

“She got a little too casual at one point, so I gave her a reminder to keep her sharp. When I asked, she just took off and put them away.”

Cinch’s triumph added to the Black Type legacy of her dam, Eye For Fun, who also produced the 2014 Golden Slipper winner, Mossfun.
