After a solid performance on Saturday, Victoria Derby winner Goldrush Guru is being primed to back up in this weekend’s Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m), according to trainer Andrew Gluyas.
Goldrush Guru placed fifth in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2000m), finishing just over two lengths from the winner after racing keenly early. The quick turnaround could help settle him better, Gluyas hopes.
“We’ll monitor him through the week, our intention is to go to the Derby,” Gluyas said. “He’ll be better for that hit out today.”
Racing wide and pulling early, Jason Holder allowed him to stride forward and find the lead where he travelled more comfortably, but was claimed late by Athanatos.
“He’s keen, and that’s been his problem this preparation,” Gluyas said. “Since the Australian Guineas, he’s been a bit aggressive. Hopefully this run takes the edge off.”
After his placing in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m), the gelding has struggled in Sydney, but Gluyas remains confident there’s more to come in his home state.
“A month between runs, so for him to lead and still stick on, I thought he was honest. He’ll run again if he pulls up well.”
Saturday’s winner Athanatos won’t contest the Derby, with trainer Phillip Stokes confirming he’s off to the paddock.
“He definitely won’t be going to the Derby,” Stokes said. “He’ll be heading home and we’ll bring him back in the spring. He looks a miler next prep.”
Scintillante, who was well backed, ran poorly and will also be spelled, Cliff Brown confirmed post-race.
Goldrush Guru has drifted to $13 for the Derby. The current favourite is Statuario at $3.50, with Lavalier, who finished second in the Chairman’s, now a $5 second elect and a likely starter according to James Cummings.
