Outspan bounced back from a modest debut to announce himself as a colt with upside after a dominant performance at Rosehill.

The Godolphin youngster settled just off the speed in the 1100m event and proved too strong late, holding off Long Throw ($15) by 1-1/2 lengths, with Miss Chanel ($4.60) another half-length away in third.

Michael Freedman’s charge showed marked improvement from his first outing, something stable representative Sophie Johnson was pleased to see.

“It was really good to see him improve the way he did,” Johnson said.

“Sam (Clipperton) got him into a lovely position and he travelled strongly before finishing it off nicely.”

“He was a bit green at his first start, but he looked much more composed today and that gave him confidence.”

The win pushes his earnings beyond $110,000 and places him on the Golden Slipper radar, although the stable is keeping expectations measured.

“We’ll just take it one run at a time,” Johnson said.

“You don’t want to rush these young horses. He’s doing everything right at the moment.”

“Michael will be back next week and we’ll assess where he’s at then.”

With Slipper markets now active, punters can track Outspan’s progress through the available online bookmakers.

Clipperton said the colt had benefited from his debut experience and showed sharp improvement.

“I thought I got it wrong last start, but it actually worked out well for him,” he said.

“He learned a lot and showed today he’s got a turn of foot. He’ll get further too.”

Outspan has since firmed into $34 for the Golden Slipper at Rosehill Gardens on March 21.
