Grahame Begg pair aim to score again at Caulfield

What Rose Quartz may lack in race experience, she certainly makes up for with ability.

The Grahame Begg-trained daughter of Written Tycoon will be aiming to make it three straight victories when she runs in the Quayclean Handicap (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Rose Quartz has faced the starter on only five occasions, registering three wins, her last two in an unbeaten run this campaign.

Begg has not rushed Rose Quartz who made her debut last April scoring at Bendigo before two unplaced efforts in three-year-old company at Sandown in May.

Rose Quartz returned to win a benchmark 64 grade race at Geelong in late November before scoring her maiden city win scoring in benchmark 70 grade at Flemington on December 18.

She rises to benchmark 78 grade on Saturday having been given a freshen-up.

“We were struggling to find the right style of race for her, so we decided to give her a freshen up and send her down the beach,” Begg told RSN.

“She had a couple of weeks down there, had a bit of R & R. She’s come back in good order and had a jump-out at Cranbourne last Monday week to prepare for this.

“It’s a stronger race than what she has raced in, so we’ll find out where she is in the peeking order, but she’s going particularly well, and it looks a nice race for her, although it’s a highly competitive race.”

Begg will also be represented by Vespertine in the Herald-Sun Handicap (1400m).

Vespertine is looking for back-to-back wins after winning over 1100m at the track on January 8.

“We think she’s very well placed in the race coming off a last start win and with the claim she’s only 2kg off the limit,” Begg said.

“She’s in great form. We earmarked this race for her under the benchmark system and under the claim she comes in really well.”
