Hawkes Racing colt Gallo Nero returns to action in Saturday’s Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill as he begins a campaign geared towards the Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) on the Gold Coast in January.
The son of Wootton Bassett famously beat Apocalyptic at Randwick in December, the same filly who has since swept Sydney’s Princess Series culminating in her Flight Stakes win. Gallo Nero then placed in the Magic Millions and Champagne Classics before his preparation ended with a heavy-track miss in the BTC Sires’ Produce Stakes.
“We’ve always had a high opinion of this horse,” co-trainer Michael Hawkes said. “He’s furnished into a lovely colt now — very calm, very professional, and he’s done everything right in his build-up. He’s in for a really nice prep.”
While short of peak fitness, Hawkes believes the colt has done enough to be in the finish first-up. “I’m pretty comfortable with where he’s at. He’s had a good jump-out and trial and will improve as he goes along. He’s forward enough to run well fresh,” he said.
Hawkes confirmed the Magic Millions Guineas remains the long-term goal, though Saturday’s run will help shape the path ahead. “He’s a horse who will tell us where to go — we’ll let him map out his own campaign,” he said.
Gangsta Granny and Husk also line up for the stable in the Group 3 The Nivison (1200m). “Gangsta Granny’s had a nice break since the Sheraco and looks spot on,” Hawkes said. “Husk has been racing well and is a lightweight chance despite the wide draw.”
