Waller out to make another stallion in the G1 Caulfield Guineas

Chris Waller knows all too well the scrutiny that comes with training a $1.6 million yearling, but the champion trainer is embracing the challenge with Caulfield Guineas favourite Wodeton.

The colt, who has already finished second in both the Golden Slipper and Golden Rose, will bid for his first Group 1 success in Saturday’s Caulfield Guineas (1600m). A win would catapult his value further, particularly after the recent passing of his sire Wootton Bassett, whose stock has become even more sought-after.

“It doesn’t change the way I train him,” Waller said. “Obviously it would be a fantastic result, but you can’t change things. We’re under pressure to get winners 52 weeks a year, so there’s no change just because his stallion died.”

Waller, who part-owns Wodeton, said the colt’s versatility gives him confidence heading into the race. “We had to make a call on whether to go to The Everest or step up in distance, but I think he deserves a chance at a mile,” Waller said. “The Wootton Bassett stock can run any trip — they’re not one dimensional. Getting him to the mile might find that extra gear.”

Waller will also saddle Autumn Boy, who finished seventh in the Golden Rose but looks suited stepping up to 1600m. “The Golden Rose wasn’t run to suit,” he said. “He looked plain on paper, but his sectionals were good in a record-run race and he’ll appreciate the mile.”

Autumn Boy, by The Autumn Sun, adds sentimental value for Waller, who trained his sire to Guineas glory in 2018. “He’s a lovely type, moves beautifully and has a great attitude — very similar to his father,” Waller said.

James McDonald continues his association with Wodeton, while Damian Lane, last year’s winning rider aboard Private Life, partners Autumn Boy. Wodeton will jump from gate 10 (potentially eight), with Autumn Boy drawn ideally in barrier one.
