Ka Ying’s fitness levels Rising ahead of The Everest

Trainer David Hayes is confident that Hong Kong sprinting sensation Ka Ying Rising will peak on race day despite mixed opinions following his first Australian trial ahead of The Everest.

Ka Ying Rising took part in a star-studded 1000m heat at Randwick on Tuesday, finishing third under top jockey Zac Purton, who made the trip from Hong Kong to partner the four-time Group 1 winner. Linebacker claimed the trial narrowly over Overpass, with Ka Ying Rising a head away in 58.39 seconds.

The trio were well clear of their rivals, including fellow Everest hopefuls Joliestar and Angel Capital, as well as Mr Brightside and Fangirl. Hayes said the trial was exactly what the gelding needed to sharpen up ahead of his Australian debut.

“It was a good, solid trial but he did need it,” Hayes said. “He had a proper hit out and probably went a bit easier than the others behind him. He’ll be twenty pounds lighter next week. He blew a few cobwebs out and will improve sharply for that effort. He’ll have a gallop on Monday and be right for the big one.”

Purton echoed the trainer’s sentiments, suggesting Ka Ying Rising will benefit greatly from the outing.

“He was feeling the moment a bit and carrying a touch more condition than usual,” Purton said. “The ground was softer than he’s used to, but he got through it fine. It’s a pass mark — and he’ll need to be better on race day, which I think he will be.”

Rated the world’s best sprinter, Ka Ying Rising is the $1.50 favourite for the $20 million Group 1 The Everest (1200m) on October 18 at Randwick.

For Hayes, returning to Australia with a horse of this calibre is a special moment.

“It’s a bit different coming home,” he said. “In Hong Kong you’ve got a smaller pool of horses, so you’re less likely to get a superstar. You only get ten or twelve new ones a year — and for one like him to come along, I didn’t expect it.”

Ten of the twelve Everest slots have now been confirmed, with Yulong Investments searching for a replacement for Private Harry and Godolphin expected to select between Tempted and Beiwacht.
