Light Infantry Man resumes in the Futurity Stakes 2025

The Ciaron Maher stable is eager for Light Infantry Man to maintain the impressive Group 1 form he displayed in Perth as he transitions into the Melbourne autumn carnival.

Originally purchased from the UK with high expectations, Light Infantry Man needed time to adjust before finally securing a breakthrough victory during the Melbourne Spring Carnival at Flemington.

That form was later validated at Group 1 level when he claimed the Northerly Stakes (1800m) at Ascot in December.

After a brief spell, Light Infantry Man is set to return in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday, where he will face stiff competition from top contenders like Mr Brightside, I Wish I Win, and Private Life.

Looking further ahead, the Maher stable has targeted the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 29 as a key race for the talented gelding.

Assistant trainer Jack Turnbull, who is based at Cranbourne, noted that Light Infantry Man had only a brief spell following his Perth campaign before gearing up for Saturday’s race.

“He had about two-and-a-half weeks off, and he’s been back in work for five or six weeks, but he’s maintained plenty of residual fitness,” Turnbull said.

“He’s a naturally fit horse. He’s one of those lighter-framed European types. He’s had some grass gallops, light treadmill work, and a jump-out to sharpen him up.”

“We debated whether to start him here or in the Blamey Stakes next week, but this race felt like a better starting point for his preparation.”

With just five weeks between Saturday’s race and the Australian Cup, Turnbull admitted that the exact path to the major event was still being assessed.

“We’ll see how he performs first and then map out a plan,” Turnbull said.

“Being a European, he’s used to racing at longer intervals—monthly or even six weeks between runs—and if we space his races too much, he could lose his edge.”

“We’ll manage him carefully. His high rating also plays a role in our planning.”
