Madiyya to the Matriarch Stakes?

Lindsay Park’s talented three-year-old Madiyya completed a hat-trick of wins with a gritty success in the Rod Griffiths Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield, confirming spring ambitions for the filly.

Trained by Ben, Will & JD Hayes, Madiyya delivered as a $1.75 favourite, weaving through from the back of the pack under Luke Currie to score by a short neck from I Only Wish ($10), with Belcony ($21) running third.

The well-bred filly is a half-sister to Zayydani, who took out the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes in 2021, and her recent form has impressed connections.

“She’s very well bred… I think the way she won today, she was strong throughout the line,” said Ben Hayes. “She’s picked up great prize money and done a great job this prep.”

He added that Queensland was deliberately avoided due to weather concerns: “It was a good move, not going to Queensland… now we put her away and we’ve got a really nice horse for the spring.”

Currie, who was aboard for her previous win, said the wide draw worked in their favour. “She was a bit better out of the machine today… we just came back, happy to stay three wide,” he said.

“She’s still learning… she’ll furnish more with time, but she’s definitely on the right path.”
