Touristic returned to the winner’s stall at Rosehill on Saturday, handling the heavy track with ease to take out the Listed Lord Mayors Cup.
Trained by Peter Snowden and ridden by Andrew Adkins, the Frankel gelding made his move approaching the turn, surging past front-runner Major Beel to score by more than two lengths. The win marked Adkins’ second for the day.
Glory Daze, who had won the week prior, finished third as the race favourite. The tough conditions proved ideal for Touristic, who had not saluted since a Mornington win nearly a year ago.
“We needed him to begin cleanly and get a soft trip early – he did both,” Adkins said. “He handled the going really well and had plenty to offer late. He’s a fit horse and really enjoyed the surface. He deserved that.”
Assistant trainer Aaron Lau was also pleased, pointing to recent form including a fourth in the Gosford Cup and a strong run in the Neville Sellwood.
“He’s been showing us all the signs that he was ready to win again,” Lau said. “The Rosehill track suits him, and he was in a good space heading into today. This was a nice reward.”
Future targets for the gelding include the Winter Cup and possibly the Caloundra Cup in Queensland.
Earlier in the day, Adkins also steered King’s Secret to victory, rounding out a memorable double for the rider.
“It’s a good feeling to ride two winners – both horses were honest and gave everything,” Adkins said.
