Miewa out to channel spirit of Peter Pan in Victoria Derby

The iconic orange and green silks once carried by Peter Pan could again shine on Derby Day, with Miewa set to represent the famous colours in Saturday’s Victoria Derby.

Peter Pan, who captivated Australian racing fans during the Great Depression, claimed both the Melbourne Cup and the race now known as the Champions Stakes in 1932 and 1934.

Breeder Peter Newsom said the colours were bought by accident at a charity auction 15 years ago. “One of our hands was still in the air when the hammer went down, so we thought we’d better race in them,” he laughed.

Now, Miewa will carry those historic silks into the $2 million classic at Flemington — and perhaps add another chapter to a legendary racing legacy.

“We bred Miewa and Nick Ryan bought him, so we chatted with him after he secured it and asked if he’d mind if we came back in,” Newsom said. “He said his interest was through lines he saw with Hitotsu.”

Miewa, by Maurice, is rated an $11 chance after finishing second in both the Super Impose Stakes (1800m) and Caulfield Classic (2000m).

“He’s had the perfect Derby prep,” trainer Nick Ryan said. “He’s been a bit unlucky, but with a full field at Flemington, it will be a different story.”

Adding to the family connection, Miewa’s half-brother Justadeel will line up in the The Big Dance (1600m) at Randwick on Melbourne Cup Day.

“We’re in the game for fun,” Newsom said. “We’ve never made a big deal about the colours, but we’re proud of them. It would be special to see them cross the line first at Flemington.”
