Mile no issue for Merrigold in Vobis Gold Distaff

Merrigold’s breakthrough over a mile at Flemington on Saturday had trainer John Sadler admitting he may have underestimated the mare’s staying ability.

The five-year-old had previously been kept to shorter trips but produced a strong finish to land the Vobis Gold Distaff (1600m), rewarding connections for finally stretching her out.

Despite failing to win in six runs this campaign, Merrigold had shown promise, including a competitive fourth in the Vobis Gold Bullion two starts earlier.

Ridden patiently by Jye McNeil, the $10 chance settled back in the field before charging clear late to score by two lengths from Make It Sweet, with Jimmy The Bear filling third.

Sadler conceded he wasn’t convinced the mile would suit but was delighted with how the mare finished the race.

“I really wanted to run her in a mile race,” he said.

“I wasn’t sure she’d get it, but she was given a perfect ride and she really ran through the line strongly.”

“That was probably her best win.”

The victory followed a consistent previous campaign where Merrigold won four times from seven starts, with Sadler noting luck had played against her this preparation.

“She had a tough run on a wet track and a couple of unlucky runs,” he said.

“Today everything went right and she showed what she’s capable of.”

Those tracking her next assignment can keep up with markets via major horse racing betting platforms.

With the mile box now ticked, Sadler is keen to explore higher-grade options.

“Black-type races are what we’ll be aiming for now,” he said.
