Munce training team is zipped and set for Magic Millions Day

While two of the leading contenders in the Magic Millions 2yo Classic market were on show at the Gold Coast on Saturday, others adopted a more understated approach, including Zip Lock, who completed a low-key gallop earlier in the day.

The son of Hellbent thrust himself into Classic contention with his victory in the Group 3 B.J. McLachlan Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm on December 27 and now shares second favouritism at $7 with Shiki.

Co-trainer Corey Munce said the team has been encouraged by the colt’s progress.

“We brought him to the Gold Coast for a gallop on Saturday morning,” Munce said.

“No land speed records were broken but the whole objective was for him to have a look at the track and imitate a race meeting so he passed with flying colours, pulled up very well and we’re very happy with him.

“He’s going to run a bold race.”

Zip Lock was trucked from Brisbane to the Gold Coast before returning home the same day, a deliberate move that has helped soften the blow of losing Cool Archie, who had been shaping as a major Magic Millions 3yo Guineas contender prior to injury.

“It is bittersweet but this horse, we feel, is doing a little bit more than what Cool Archie did at the same point in time and all I know that this horse will run a heck of a race next week.”

Warwoven remains the $2 market leader after his dominant Eagle Farm win on January 3.

Both Warwoven and Zip Lock returned Racing and Sports ratings of 109 in their most recent victories.

The Munce camp will also be represented twice in the Magic Millions Fillies and Mares (1300m), with Lonhro’s Queen joined by last-start Magic Millions Rising Stars 3&4yo F&M Plate (1300m) winner Poster Girl.

Punters are already weighing up options across major online bookmakers ahead of Magic Millions Day.

At $11 in all-in markets, Chris Munce acknowledged it was a training miscalculation to previously stretch Poster Girl out in distance.

“Lonhro’s Queen was originally heading out for a spell after her last run but being eligible for a wildcard entry into this race we’re heading there,” Corey said.

“She has been a revelation since coming here and has fitted into the Queensland lifestyle beautifully.

“There’s nothing wrong with her and she pulled up well.”

Rachel King keeps the ride on Lonhro’s Queen, who is the $6 equal favourite.
