Niance impresses in the Bel Esprit Stakes at Caulfield

Returning from a setback with flair, Niance delivered a commanding performance to win the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Originally set for an Oakleigh Plate campaign, a paddock accident derailed her plans earlier in the year. Now fully recovered from a fractured skull, the Swiss Ace mare showed no signs of rust, powering home wide under Daniel Moor to secure a black-type treble.

Firm in the market at $2.40, Niance edged out Cleo Cat ($4.40) by ¾ length, with Aviatress ($10) finishing close behind in third place.

Trainer Grahame Begg was thrilled with the result, especially after the mare’s long recovery.

“To come back from that kind of injury and do this first-up is a big statement,” Begg said. “She’s always shown tenacity and this prep she’s been spot on.”

It was Moor’s first time aboard Niance, picking up the ride after Jordan Childs committed to Queensland. Begg suggested there may be more on the horizon for the resilient mare.

“We’re considering sending her to Queensland for the Healy Stakes, weather permitting,” he said. “Otherwise, a local option like the Heath Stakes is very appealing for August.”
