Pint-sized mare Jadavi to target winter features

Upcoming feature weight-for-age races at Belmont has caught the attention of Jadavi trainer, Ian Shield.

Ian Shield declared the Hyperion Stakes (1600m) and the Strickland Stakes (2000) as primary targets for Jadavi after she won the $100,000 Tabtouch Stakes (2100m) at Ascot on Saturday.

Capel-based Shield will consult part-owner Andy Reid, but believes the in form eight-year-old deserves to have a crack at dual Group 3 races.

“There are not a lot of races for her, so we have to grab what is there,” Shield said on Tabradio.

“It’s all up to Andy, but while she is racing like this we’ll keep her going for sure.

“Until she tells us she wants to back off we’ll keep her going I think.

“That’s where we have to go and stick at-weight-for-age.

“That’s where we would head, yeah.

“While she’s still clean, we’ll keep her going.”

Jadavi is small in stature, but packs a powerful punch with her turn of foot.

She came from last in the field of six and collared Last Of The Line in the shadows of the post to score narrowly by short-head in the Tabtouch Stakes.

It came hot on the heels of her top first-up run in the Sheila Gwynne Classic (1400m) when a close second to Stellar Vista at Ascot on April 22.

Jadavi and Last Of The Line fought out a close contest in the Tabtouch Stakes and also little separated the pair in Tabtouch betting.

Last Of The Line started the $3.50 favourite and shaded Jadavi for market lead with the daughter of Coconut Grove at $3.60.

Despite a trial between the Sheila Gwynne Classic and the Tabtouch Stakes, Shield thought Jadavi might have been underdone.

“We knew it was a jump up, but we didn’t really think she was quite fit enough,” Shield said.

“But she obviously was.

“She’s a tough little bugger and everything she does is in a hurry.

“She likes to work and it makes it easier when they are like that.”

Jadavi returned to the winner’s list for the first time since winning the Pinjarra Cup (2300m) a year ago.

Name after Reid’s three children, Jadavi has won eight races from 42 starts and $316,040 in prizemoney.
