Super time for boom filly Super Smink’s large group of owners

A two-year-old with a sharp turn of foot who has amassed more than half-a-million-dollars in prizemoney in only five career starts – that’s owning the dream, literally.

Super Smink has taken her big group of owners, which includes Own The Dream participants, on a thrilling ride over the past three months.

Since debuting in February, the daughter of Super One has claimed multiple two-year-old feature races including the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate and Group 3 WA Sires’ Produce Stakes.

“If you told me that Super Smink would be a Group 2 and Group 3 winner in her first prep, I could never have imagined it,” owner Andrew Durnin said.

Trained by Dan Morton, Super Smink burst onto the scene by winning the Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic, before a narrow defeat to the talented Live To Tell in the Gimcrack.

However, she turned the tables on Live To Tell and scored by more than two lengths in the Karrakatta to take out WA’s most prestigious two-year-old race.

“Winning the Karrakatta was just amazing,” Andrew said.

“We were so proud of the horse and what she achieved. It was pure elation. I must have watched the replay at least 50 times.”

A fortnight after the Karrakatta success, punters zeroed-in on Super Smink in the Group 3 WA Sires and she duly saluted as the $1.18 market elect to bring her career earnings to $547,690.

Now spelling with plans to target Group 1 races at The Pinnacles later this year, her ownership group are reminiscing on the whirlwind journey.

Andrew’s link with Super Smink began after he and a group of mates decided to join Racing and Wagering WA’s Own The Dream initiative.

Although they didn’t win the $30,000 top prize, Andrew’s team received a $1500 voucher for Westspeed Platinum yearling to kick start their ownership journey.

“I had four friends who had never owned a horse and only went to a couple race meetings,” he said.

“The series got them so excited that, with the $1500 voucher, we toyed up getting one or two shares.

“The first horse was a Maschino colt and the second horse was Super Smink. We took five per cent in each and it just went from there.

“If it wasn’t for Own The Dream, we would not have got involved with Super Smink.”
