Another wide draw awaits Polymnia in her bid to win The Roses at Doomben, but trainer Tom Charlton remains confident in the filly’s ability to overcome the odds. Drawing gate 21, Polymnia has once again been dealt a tough hand, having already won and placed from difficult positions this campaign.
She was a game third to Benagil in the Australasian Oaks last start and also placed in the Adrian Knox Stakes in April. Charlton is hopeful her ability and recent freshen-up will help her offset the wide alley.
“She’s drawn poorly again, which has been the story of her prep,” Charlton said. “But she’s taken travel well, and 2000 metres is ideal off the break.”
The stable will also saddle Klondike in the Doomben Cup, while eyes will be on Hurstville Zagreb in Sydney as he aims to punch his ticket to the Queensland Derby.
The son of Almanzor is seeking to atone for missing the Australian Derby earlier this year due to a minor injury. After a narrow loss at Gosford last start, connections are hopeful he can impress at Randwick on Saturday.
“He’s very progressive,” Charlton said. “Randwick and the step up to 1800m will suit, and if he wins, Brisbane will be next.”
