Let’s Fly has stormed into Queensland Oaks contention with a crushing victory at Randwick, leaving trainer Will Freedman and connections seriously considering a late nomination for the Group 1 classic.
The three-year-old filly, sent out at $31, travelled comfortably near the speed before surging clear in the Chalouhi Handicap (1800m), thrashing her rivals by 5-3/4 lengths. She’s A Dealer ran second ($10), with favourite Hurstville Zagreb ($4.20) in third.
“She came to hand a lot quicker than expected,” Freedman said. “We thought the Oaks might be too soon, but off that performance, we have to reconsider.”
A half-sister to Mimi’s Award, who was successful at distances beyond 2400m, Let’s Fly proved she has the staying credentials to be competitive over longer trips.
Freedman had originally hesitated to enter the filly for the Queensland Oaks, but Saturday’s win changed everything.
“She was dominant. The seven-day back-up worked, and she handled the heavy track beautifully,” he said. “We’ll make a decision this week.”
Connections can pay a $3600 late nomination fee by Wednesday, or a $15,300 fee closer to race week if they opt to wait. The Oaks takes place at Eagle Farm on June 7.
Co-trainer Roger James confirmed that runner-up She’s A Dealer remains on track for the same target despite her dislike for the heavy surface at Randwick.
“She wasn’t comfortable in the going, but she stuck on bravely,” James said. “We’ll send her up Wednesday and see if she gets a run.”
Both fillies will be monitored over the coming week with the Queensland Oaks rapidly approaching.
