Casual Connection could target the Brisbane Cup

Casual Connection has made it back-to-back wins in the PF Civil Handicap (2400m) at Randwick, delivering trainer John Sargent a sense of déjà vu and opening the door to a potential second shot at the Brisbane Cup (3200m).

The six-year-old gelding relished the heavy track, surging to a dominant victory under apprentice Molly Bourke. Sent out at $11, Casual Connection took over near the home turn and was never headed, defeating Wuddzz by three lengths, with Asgoodassobergets a further 1-1/4 lengths away in third.

Sargent was thrilled with the win but remained cautious about taking the veteran stayer north again.

“If it’s dry, we won’t go,” he said. “Last year he didn’t handle the firm track at all. He’s older now, so we’ll monitor the weather before making any decisions.”

Bourke credited the win to the gelding’s high cruising speed and the ability to roll into the race uninterrupted.

“He’s got to build momentum. As long as nothing’s holding him up, he’s hard to catch,” she said.

Earlier in the day, 3kg claimer William Stanley celebrated a career milestone, guiding Flying Embers to victory in the Midway Handicap (1400m). It marked his first Saturday metro success and earned him high praise from trainer John Thompson.

“He’s strong, listens to instructions, and wants to learn,” Thompson said. “When he gets it wrong, he beats himself up, which shows he cares. He’ll go a long way.”

Flying Embers, a filly Thompson holds in high regard, justified favouritism and could be one to follow in the coming months.
