Schiller to miss Queensland racing carnival with back injury

With Tyler Schiller sidelined due to injury, top Sydney hoop Tommy Berry has been booked to ride exciting colt Gallo Nero in the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm this Saturday.

Schiller was injured in a pre-race incident at Canterbury, where he fell from his mount while leaving the parade yard. He was assessed by trackside medics before being transported to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

Medical scans revealed a fracture to the T8 vertebra in his mid-back, forcing the in-form jockey to take at least a six-week break from racing. Schiller later shared an update via X (formerly Twitter): “Fractured T8, out for six weeks.”

His absence left Gallo Nero, who is currently the $4.40 market elect with top betting sites, without a rider for the Group 2 feature. Hawkes Racing wasted little time in securing Berry as his replacement, with Berry also picking up the ride on Payline in the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m).

Schiller’s enforced layoff will see him miss the remainder of the Brisbane winter carnival, while fellow jockey Blake Shinn has also been ruled out of the Queensland racing season with a foot injury.
