Sequista in bid to get Oxlade Stakes campaign back on track

Sequista’s winter campaign has encountered a bump in the road following an incident while unloading from a float, but her connections remain hopeful of salvaging their Queensland plans.

Gerald Ryan, who trains the talented two-year-old in partnership with Sterling Alexiou, explained that Sequista sustained minor abrasions to her leg when she stepped awkwardly while disembarking for a race at Gosford two weeks ago.

“She didn’t play up, she was just walking off the float and her leg went over the edge of the tailboard,” Ryan said. “She got a few small cuts on the inside of her cannon bone.”

While the injuries weren’t serious and she hasn’t missed any work, the mishap caused her to miss a key lead-up run and forced Ryan to delay her trip to Brisbane for the Listed Bill Carter Stakes (1350m) at Doomben.

Instead, Sequista is nominated for the Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation Handicap (1200m) at Randwick this Saturday. Ryan said he’s leaning toward running, but the expected heavy track could impact that decision.

“She’s going well and hasn’t missed a beat in her work,” Ryan said. “But going five or six weeks between runs on a heavy 10 – it’s not ideal.”

Set to carry 56kg after apprentice Braith Nock’s claim, Sequista has been given a shot in the day’s opening event, ensuring she’ll race on the best part of the track if she starts.

Queensland remains in play, with Ryan identifying the Oxlade Stakes (1200m) on Stradbroke Handicap day as a likely goal.
