Spring carnival contenders to trial at Werribee

Some contenders for the Melbourne Spring Carnival are set to be put through their paces in a series of jump-outs at Werribee.

The Flemington jump-outs will be held at Werribee on Friday morning with Group 1 performers Johnny Get Angry, Mr Brightside, Tofane, Callsign Mav among potential spring contenders on display.

The third heat over 800m will feature Sinawann, Mr Brightside, Tofane, Callsign Mav, Showmanship, Gold Spark and Selburose.

It will be the first public appearance of Mr Brightside since he took out the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap (1600m) at Randwick in April.

The Ben and J D Hayes-trained galloper will trial again, at Flemington, next week ahead of his first-up run in the Group 2 P B Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 13.

“He’s in excellent order. I’m really happy with the way he’s building up,” Ben Hayes said.

“I’d like to think he’ll take the next step this spring after we took the conservative approach and gave him a break after the Doncaster.

“Looking at him physically, he’s got a nice healthy coat on him, he’s strengthened a little bit. He doesn’t need to improve much and if he holds his form from last prep, he’ll be in for a good campaign.”

Hayes is looking forward to seeing how Makram performs in his 800m jump-out later in the morning.

An imported galloper, Makram has only raced twice in Australia, winning at his second run over 1700m at Flemington on Anzac Day.

The Hayes brothers have followed their father David, and grandfather Colin, by giving Makram a light campaign to start off in Australia before getting more serious in his second campaign.

“He’s our Caulfield Cup horse,” Hayes said.

“He’s got good form over 2400 metres overseas and is an exciting horse that has acclimatised well.

“We’ve got some other nice one’s going around, so it will be an interesting morning.”
