Enchanted Heart to relish wet July Sprint

Stakes winner Enchanted Heart can end her Randwick hoodoo in the July Sprint, and potentially book herself a berth in the first Group race of the new season.

The mare is yet to run a place in seven starts at Sydney’s premier track, her best result a fourth to Surreal Step over 1100m in May.

Trainer Kris Lees isn’t reading too much into that statistic and given Enchanted Heart looks set to strike her favoured wet conditions, he expects her to run a bold race in Saturday’s July Sprint (1100m).

“I can recall her running some good races there and to be fair, she has probably run in better quality races at Randwick compared to other tracks,” Lees said.

“She has been freshened up and with a gap between runs, I think she will run well.

“She is going better than her form reads so she could easily show up.”

A winner of the Listed Takeover Target Stakes last year, Enchanted Heart drops significantly in grade after finishing midfield behind Najmaty in the Dane Ripper Stakes (1300m) and down the track in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m), both run on unsuitably firm surfaces.

A rising six-year-old, the daughter of Shamus Award is set to be sold at an upcoming Australian Bloodstock offering of broodmares, but if she performs on Saturday, she might yet get a chance to add more black-type to her page.

“If she won or ran really well, we would consider a Missile Stakes run,” Lees said.

“We will see after Saturday.”

Another honest performer for the stable, Our Candidate, will chase back-to-back wins in the Quayclean Handicap (2400m).

The gelding broke a three-year drought from the winner’s stall at Grafton last start and while he has topweight of 60kg and returns to Saturday city grade, Lees says the horse is in great shape.

“He got a confidence booster at Grafton,” he said

“Obviously back up in grade and weight again, but I’m pretty confident that has given him a bit of a kick winning a race like that.”
