Greg Eurell had his eye on an easier assignment for Red Galaxy at Sandown, but after missing out on a spot in his preferred race, the trainer opted to roll the dice in tougher company.
The lightly raced gelding will now line up in Saturday’s benchmark 100 Senet Gambling Law Experts Handicap over 1400m, a shift from the benchmark 84 contest that initially looked more suitable.
“We nominated for both the benchmark 84 and benchmark 100 but weren’t going to get into the 84,” Eurell said. “Fortunately, we also had him in the 100 and decided to go that way.”
Red Galaxy, a rising five-year-old with three wins from five starts, is being considered for a possible tilt at the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) if he performs well this weekend.
“This race will be a strong test,” Eurell said. “If he’s competitive, then a trip north could be on the table. If not, we stay local.”
Red Galaxy resumed with a solid win in a benchmark 70 at Sale earlier this month, and Eurell says the gelding has always shown ability but needed time to mature physically.
“He’s a big, strong type and we’ve had to be patient with him,” Eurell said. “But this prep has been smooth, and I’m hoping we start to see the full package now.”
“His work’s been great, he’s drawn well, and he carries a good weight. It’s a test, but one we’re looking forward to.”
