Successful season set to continue for training partners Charlton and O’Shea

Tom Charlton and John O’Shea are marking the end of their first year in partnership with a strong record and momentum heading into Randwick this weekend.

Since teaming up on July 2 last year with a win from Bartolf at Scone, the training duo has amassed 35 metropolitan victories and an enviable strike rate of over 15 per cent.

Their season has been highlighted by Group 1 wins from Schwarz in the William Reid Stakes, Linebacker in the Randwick Guineas, and Maison Louis in the Queensland Derby.

“It wasn’t a massive change but it is one I have thoroughly enjoyed and I’m very lucky,” Charlton said.

“We’ve had a great group of horses and staff, and we’ve achieved good results—three individual Group Ones, it’s been excellent.”

This weekend, Getafix is among their hopefuls at Randwick. Though only second emergency, the three-year-old is a joint $2.50 favourite in the TAB Handicap (1400m) after a commanding Kensington win.

“He and Linebacker were our two top juveniles last year and both were Golden Rose nominations,” Charlton said.

“Last time, everything clicked—he settled well and finished strongly. Jason Collett’s style should suit him again.”

Captain Amelia returns in the last race on the card, and Charlton believes she can turn the tables after a luckless fifth behind Changing Colours at Rosehill.

“She’s drawn awkwardly or had bad luck in the run, but Randwick might suit her better,” Charlton added.
