Thompson to let Secret out at Randwick races

Gimcrack Stakes winner Bel Merci will not be taking part in the upcoming spring campaign, with trainer John Thompson confirming she’s sidelined due to a combination of health issues encountered while spelling.

“She went to the paddock and had a virus and feet issues so she is out for an extended break,” Thompson said. “She’ll miss the spring.”

While the absence of Bel Merci is a blow, Thompson is optimistic about Open Secret’s return to the track. The progressive filly is set to resume in Saturday’s Keenland September Yearling Sale Handicap (1100m) at Randwick, and early market moves have seen her firm from $15 to $10.

Open Secret announced herself with a debut victory at Randwick earlier this year and followed that with solid performances against some of the best juveniles, including placings behind Rivellino in the Inglis Millennium and Within The Law in the Sweet Embrace Stakes.

Following a spell after running midfield in the Magic Night Stakes, Thompson reports that the filly has returned stronger and more seasoned.

“She won well first-up last time and I think it just took the edge off her,” he explained. “Her next runs were in tough races, but she was never far away and has returned in great order.”

Saturday’s race represents the final two-year-old opportunity before the new season kicks off on August 1. Among her rivals are stakes-winner Shaggy, promising colt Nashville Jack, and the exciting Nazwah.
