Arcora has thrust himself into Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) contention with a gutsy win in Saturday’s Byerley Handicap (1800m) at Flemington, securing a coveted ballot exemption into the spring classic.
Trained by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young and ridden by John Allen, the colt edged out Bayou Music ($5) by a long head, with Arabian Prince ($8.50) in third. He started the $4.20 favourite after an eye-catching second at Flemington last month.
“Off his first-up run, I told Trent and Natalie, ‘There’s our Derby horse,’” said stable representative Sam Griggs. “He’s still got a lot of improvement to come and getting the win today will only help his confidence.”
Griggs was impressed with Arcora’s professionalism, especially given the slow tempo: “We didn’t want him to lead because he tends to float, and John executed that perfectly.”
Plans now include a strategic build-up to the Derby through September and October’s 2000-metre races.
