It was a banner day for Joe Pride, who saddled six runners nationwide on Saturday and walked away with an impressive haul: two victories, three runners-up and a third placing, including a stable one-two in the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap at Randwick.
Weeping Woman ($2.60 fav) overpowered Coal Crusher ($6) late to claim the sprint, coming shortly after Estadio Mestalla ($9.50) produced a bold effort to finish second behind Yorkshire ($3.90 fav) in the $2 million The Ingham (1600m).
Over at Eagle Farm, The Black Cloud ($3.30 fav) struck in the Listed Bribie Handicap (1000m), while Private Eye ($2.20 fav) almost added a major scalp at Pakenham before being nailed on the line in The Supernova (1400m).
Tennessir ($7.50) rounded out Pride’s afternoon with a third-place finish at Newcastle.
With Pride in Victoria to watch Private Eye and his son Brave sidelined by an ankle injury, Orla Pearl represented the stable and said Weeping Woman’s breakthrough stakes triumph was richly deserved.
“It was just so good to see her put it all together and really stepping up this preparation,” Pearl said.
Earlier on the program, Future History ($5) notched his first Sydney success after a gritty front-running win in the Listed Christmas Cup (2400m), fending off Asterix ($7).
Jockey Adam Hyeronimus said controlling the tempo was the winning move.
“He’s a bit quirky and takes a bit of riding, but we controlled the race and that’s what won the race for us,” he said.
The eight-year-old, who won the 2023 The Bart Cummings (2520m) and contested the Melbourne Cup (3200m), had not won since claiming a Group event at Moonee Valley over a year ago.
Assistant trainer Johann Gerard-Dubord praised the horse’s resilience.
“He has done such a good job… they had to be patient to get another win, but it was worth it.”
