A strategic gear change and a more conservative ride almost saw Wodeton claim the Golden Slipper, and trainer Chris Waller is sticking with the same plan for Saturday’s Group 1 ATC Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.
Wodeton, fitted with winkers for the first time, surged late in the Slipper to narrowly miss behind Marhoona. Waller is again opting for a quiet ride, with internationally renowned jockey Ryan Moore taking over from James McDonald.
Moore’s involvement follows McDonald’s commitments with Romantic Warrior in Dubai. He will look to add another juvenile victory to his resume after guiding Shinzo to success in the 2023 Golden Slipper.
Waller expressed confidence in the colt’s recovery, stating, “He’s a colt, he’s a young horse. He’s thriving,” and he believes the 1400m will be no issue.
Moore will also ride Switzerland in the TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) and Desert Hero in the Chairman’s Quality (2600m).
Meanwhile, trainers David Brideoake and Matt Laurie will battle for family bragging rights with Prestige Forever and Vinrock in the Sires’.
