Femminile will represent Yulong in this Saturday’s $1 million Queensland Derby after being secured for $1.5 million during Tuesday’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.
The daughter of Dundeel, who recently claimed victory in the Group 1 South Australian Derby, will remain in training with Phillip Stokes, while donning her new owner’s colours this weekend. Sam Fairgray, Yulong’s COO, said the investment could already pay dividends if she wins on Saturday.
“She’ll run for us on Saturday in the Yulong silks,” Fairgray said. “Mr Zhang was impressed by her and felt she still has plenty of upside. If she wins this weekend, we’ll have got her at a bargain.”
“Looking ahead, she could develop into a potential Caulfield Cup contender as a four-year-old.”
Femminile is rated a $9.50 chance for the Queensland Derby, where she’ll face Statuario, her runner-up from the SA Derby, who currently heads the betting with Australian betting sites.
Tuesday’s session saw 14 mares fetch seven figures or more, with Lady Laguna – also from OTI Racing – selling to James Harron for $2.5 million shortly after Femminile.
Zougotcha led all sales, commanding $5.25 million from Tom Magnier, the second-highest price paid for a broodmare in Australia. Waller stablemate Atishu followed at $2.7 million, sold to Yulong, while Magnier also purchased Climbing Star for $2.1 million.
Katsumi Yoshida was again active, paying $1.6 million for Revolutionary Miss among several acquisitions.
