One of the standout moments of this year’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale came with the sale of Zougotcha, who fetched an eye-watering $5.25 million on Tuesday, making her the second highest-priced broodmare in Australian history.
Tom Magnier of Coolmore Stud secured the prized daughter of Zoustar, confirming she will visit the highly sought-after stallion Wootton Bassett this season. The stallion commands a record-breaking service fee of $385,000, including GST.
“We’re thrilled to get a mare of her calibre,” said Magnier. “Wootton Bassett has been phenomenal here and overseas, and Zougotcha is a perfect match for him. We’re fortunate to work closely with the Waller stable, and this mare is top-shelf.”
Zougotcha’s racing record includes three Group 1 triumphs in the Flight Stakes, Coolmore Classic, and Queen Of The Turf. She retired with earnings of more than $2.6 million from 18 starts and was purchased as a yearling for $500,000.
The auction floor was lively, with bidding starting at $1 million and quickly rising in steady increments before settling at the final amount.
Part-owner Christine Cook expressed pride and gratitude at the sale. “She’s done everything we could have hoped for,” said Cook. “She’s been a dream. Hopefully, her foals carry that same brilliance.”
Also in the spotlight was Climbing Star, another Group 1-winning Zoustar mare, purchased by Magnier for $2.1 million. Yulong snapped up Atishu for $2.7 million, planning to pair her with Alabama Express later this season.
