Trainer David Pfeiffer is leaning toward the Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on Saturday for Whinchat, whose quirks make race selection a careful process.
Whinchat, who is also nominated at the Sunshine Coast, has a history of barrier issues, including rearing and missing the start by six lengths in a Randwick benchmark 94 event earlier in the campaign.
“I think he’s flying,” Pfeiffer said. “That second-up run was unfortunate—he reared in the gates and lost all chance. It was a race he should have won.”
The gelding has run admirably in other recent starts despite wide draws and speed pressure, finishing within two lengths of the winner in the Listed Civic Stakes (1400m).
Pfeiffer is hopeful the tempo will be kinder this time. “There were four speed horses last start, but they’re missing this weekend. Travelling north isn’t ideal given his barrier quirks.”
Whinchat missed an entire year of racing due to a ligament injury, and Pfeiffer noted he’s taken a bit longer to hit peak fitness this preparation.
“He had two trials, then hurt a ligament behind his knee. It wasn’t major, but it put him out for a few months,” he said. “He’s a bit older now and carrying a bit more weight—it’s taken longer to bring him back.”
Jay Ford, who guided Whinchat in a strong piece of work on Tuesday, is booked for the ride again. Pfeiffer added: “This race is ideal. He just needs to find a rhythm early and get the right run.”
Whinchat is rated a $13 shot in pre-post betting markets for the Winter Stakes, with stable confidence he can perform strongly.
