Magnaspin set to shine at Sandown on Boxing Day races

Magnaspin will attempt to rediscover his best form when he returns to a happy hunting ground at Sandown on Friday.

The Leon and Troy Corstens and Will Larkin-trained gelding hasn’t raced on the Lakeside circuit before, but his record on the Hillside track—two wins and a third from three starts—has the stable optimistic ahead of the Listed Lord Stakes (1600m).

Third-up and fitter for two solid runs this preparation, Magnaspin appears ready to peak.

He kicked off with a strong sixth in the Testa Rossa Stakes (1400m) before another sixth placing in the VOBIS Gold Bullion (1400m) earlier this month.

“He’s come out of that last run really well and the step up to the mile, third-up, he should be ready to improve,” Larkin said.

“He really loves Sandown and has a real affinity for the track. He’s won a few races there and last prep he won a nice race there.”

Larkin explained the gelding had been given an extended break following a long winter campaign, resulting in a slightly slower build-up this preparation.

“He’s a horse that has come up a bit slower this time as we gave him a bit of a bigger spell and after the two runs, his fitness should be right there now,” he said.

Rising apprentice Luke Cartwright—riding in terrific form—has been booked for the Boxing Day assignment.
